Cover-up work starts with understanding the tattoo that’s already there. Dark areas, dense line work, old color, and changes in the skin can all affect how a new design will work over the top.

The aim isn’t simply to hide the original tattoo. It’s to find a design that works with the existing ink and suits the area of the body. That takes planning, an understanding of color and contrast, and an honest conversation about the limits of the project.

An older tattoo doesn’t always need to be covered completely. Depending on the original work and what you want to change, it may be possible to rework the lines, improve contrast, bring new color into the design, or build a larger piece around it.

Mesa Tattoo On Upshur is located in a private loft in Slabtown, NW Portland. Cover-up consultations are free and take place in person. Photos can be helpful when getting started, but seeing the tattoo in person makes it easier to discuss its condition, placement, and possible next steps.

Does a cover-up hurt more than a regular tattoo?

It depends on the area and the tattoo being worked on. Scar tissue and heavily tattooed areas can feel different, and everyone’s pain tolerance is different.

Can any tattoo be covered?

Do you need to see my tattoo in person before quoting a price?

Yes. Photos are useful for an initial look, but seeing the tattoo in person helps us assess the work involved and give you a more accurate estimate.

How much does a cover-up cost?

The rate is $250 per hour, with a $100 shop minimum. The time needed depends on the size and complexity of the tattoo and the approach we agree on. We’ll discuss the likely time and cost during your consultation.

Is the consultation free?

Yes. There is no charge for the consultation. It’s a chance to look at your tattoo, talk about what you’d like to change, and discuss the available options.
